It is midway through March, and already the Town of Mayerthorpe has hosted a number of important community events.
On March 7, 2015, Parent Link, which focuses on early childhood developmental programs, hosted the Women’s Retreat at the Diamond Centre.
Mayerthorpe Fire Department hosted its accredited S200 over March 7, 8, and 14, 2015. This year, the program focused on fire behaviour and building construction emphasizing features of construction, methods of construction, and materials which could be used in building construction. The program also focused on reading smoke, as well as fire department communications. For anyone who is interested in becoming a member of the Mayerthorpe Fire Department, the Spring Recruit is now underway.
Over the upcoming weeks, students in local schools will have the opportunity to participate in D.A.R.E, Drug Abuse Resistance Education. The program, which examines the three particular threats to students (smoking, drinking, and drugs), focuses on providing education and awareness regarding the effects of drugs, cigarettes, and alcohol in order to make it easier for youths to say ‘no’ to temptation and peer pressure.
The Seniors Tax Program is already underway in Mayerthorpe. It will continue to run over the next couple of weeks.
Kate Patrick, mayor of the Town of Mayerthorpe, emphasizes the importance of events like this for the community: “These are important projects that keep people aware of what’s happening within the community,” Mayor Patrick states.
Of course, this past weekend also featured another prominent event within the town of Mayerthorpe. Friday the 13th was officially declared “Jersey Day,” enabling local businesses and individuals to participate and show their support as Mayerthorpe played host to the Bantam D provincials. Eight provincial teams attended including the Mayerthorpe Mustangs, the Manning Comets, the Thorhild Titans, the Wabamun Wildcats, the Eckville Eagles, the Foremost/Bow Island Flyers, the Oyen Bees, and the Daysland/Forestburg Thunderstars. Opening ceremonies kicked off at 5:45 on Friday the 13th at the Mayerthorpe arena, and the teams continued to battle it out over the duration of the weekend. The banquet was held at 7 p.m. on the 13th at the Diamond Centre.
