Mayerthorpe library revives ancient art

By Susan Hofforth

Interested in Encaustics? Now, you can take a class at the Mayerthorpe Public Library.

Encaustics is painting with wax. It is an ancient art form that dates back more than 2,000 years, and it is still a lot of fun. It’s great for beginners or experienced artists. “All you need is a spirit of fun… and a friend or two,” says the poster.

In encaustic painting, coloured pigments are added to beeswax and applied to a surface. This is usually canvas, but even wood can be used. Metal tools and brushes can be used to manipulate the wax once it has cooled on the surface. The technique is much easier today than it was in the ancient past because modern tools like heat lamps and heat guns can extend the time the artists have to work with. It is these modern inventions that are causing a revival in the art form.

The workshop, led by artist Katherine Hicks, will take place at the Mayerthorpe Library on February 20 from 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. It is open to beginner or experienced artists aged 11 years and up. You will need to bring a hairdryer, extension cord, and a lunch. Call the library at 786-2404 to register.
