Mud-slinging fun at Westward Hall

Hundreds of people went to the Westward Community Hall on the weekend in anticipation of watching the mud fly, and they were not disappointed. The mud bogs organized by the Whitecourt & District Agriculture Society is into its second year. For those who couldn’t attend this time, there will be another mud bog event on August 17 and 18.

Overall, the weather co-operated as the sun managed to break through the smoke-filled skies and onlookers only experienced a few short, scattered sprinkles in the late afternoon. Bug-spray and ratty shoes were a must if you were anywhere close to the mud pits. Some enjoyed being pelted with chunks of mud that flew from the tires as the vehicles attempted to gain traction and make it to the end of the run.

Some spectators brought lawn chairs or blankets to sit on while rows upon rows of people packed the bleachers for an overall view. Food trucks were set up providing a wide variety of tasty foods. Two bouncy castles were provided by Melissa’s Bouncy Castles out of Edson for the little ones. A live band and dance followed.

Brandon Murray, one of the event organizers, said entries for the mud bogs came from all over the province for a chance to show off their driving skills, vehicle performance and, of course, the modifications done to get these powerhouses through the mud. The Agricultural Society had over 25 people volunteering to ensure the event ran smoothly and safely for everyone who attended.

There were several categories for the day. High-powered trucks kicked off the start and ended with the lower horsepower vehicles. For some vehicles, it was no easy feat getting to the end in the thick mud and some leaving vehicle parts 10 feet past the start line. Next up were the quads and side-by-sides as they, too, hit the mud run competing to be first to the finish line. On the grass field were the lawnmower races. It was an opportunity for the young to test their abilities behind the wheel. Youth as young as 11 gave the crowd something to cheer about.

For all category racers, it was more about finishing the run and having fun rather than winning. They look forward to returning in the next few months.
