Mudbogging 2.0: last roar of 2019

By Ashley Clementovich

The first snowflakes of fall were not enough to deter people from attending the second 2019 Mud Bogging weekend event put on by the Western Alberta Mudbog Association and The Whitecourt District Agricultural Society.

Bundled up in hats, mitts, and their warmest flannel, spectators began trickling into the Agricultural Society grounds on Saturday afternoon, ready for some roaring entertainment. Cheers erupted from the stands as trucks raced side by side down the pits, spraying coating mud on anyone who dared to stand too close.

To combat the autumn chill in the air, spectators warmed their hands on cups of coffee and hot chocolate or huddled over steaming plates of perogies and cheesy taco fries. Those with a sweet tooth indulged in bulging bags of mini donuts and cotton candy.

The audience was entertained with each race; laughter filling the air whenever a vehicle would become stuck in the mud and require a tow out. Even more, chortles erupted from the stands as those rescuers on foot also sank deep into the mud, needing their assistance to be pulled out of the muck. Luckily, extra people around the pits weren’t afraid to get a little dirty, and happily lent helping hands.

Following the first half of races, a souped-up group of lawnmowers lined up for their event. The kids racing event immediately followed, who arguably could have outraced the adults on the lawnmowers.

Along with two days of events, the weekend also held a family dance on Saturday night, with Last Dance DJ.

This was the second year for the Whitecourt Mudbogs and was made possible by the many sponsors and dedicated volunteers.

With colder weather on its way, this was the last WAMA event of the year. Get ready for next year’s mud bogging events! Those wishing to participate can register on the day, a few hours before it all begins.
