Not the greatest week for the Whitecourt Wolverines

The Whitecourt Wolverines kicked things off last week with a home game against the Spruce Grove Saints (pictured). The home team scored first thanks to a doozy by Cooper Smyl from Alex Dominique and Zack Morissette at 8:36 of the first period. Just under four minutes later, the Saints responded, tying things up. Not satisfied with the tie, the Saints scored another before the period ended, 2-1.

In the second frame, the Spruce Grove Saints scored quickly, under a minute, on the powerplay thanks to a high-sticking penalty called on Alex Dominique. The Whitecourt Wolverines shook off their deficit of 3-1 and focused on getting back in the game. Chase Broda scored at 7:37, and a little over a minute later, Cooper Smyl scored his second of the game, tying things up at three apiece. Just as they had done in the first period, the Spruce Grove Saints notched two goals in the final half ending the period at 5-3 for the visitors.

Jaxon Dube scored fifty-four seconds into the third period, with assists from Christiano Aiello and Travis Baker. The home team was within one! Things came unglued around the nine-minute mark of the period as both Caleb MacDonald and Saints player Brophy Dunne got penalties for a game misconduct and fighting. Dunne also got a penalty for kneeing, and MacDonald picked one up for being an instigator. A few minutes later, Whitecourt Wolverine defenseman Tanner Komzak was penalized for a blow to the head and given a game misconduct. Once the dust settled, the Whitecourt Wolverines lost 6-4.

The Whitecourt Wolverines were on the road to Fort McMurray to take on the Oil Barons on Friday night. The low-scoring matchup saw two goals in the first period, both from the Barons. In the second period, there were no goals scored by either team. In the final frame of the contest, the Whitecourt Wolverines got on the board to start their comeback. Though they fought valiantly and even made the last-ditch attempt to pull the goalie, the Barons took the game, 3-1, landing an empty netter at 19:08.

Following the loss the night before, the Whitecourt Wolverines hit the ice at the Centerfire Place on Saturday, November 20, ready to get back in the win column. In the first, the Whitecourt Wolverines were on the board for three things, none of which were goals. Cooper Smyl had two high-sticking penalties, and Travis Baker sat two minutes for slashing.

In the second period, the Fort McMurray Oil Barons scored a short-handed market while on the penalty kill. That would be the only goal of the game. The final from Fort McMurray was 1-0. The Wolverines have three home games coming up. They play the Drayton Valley Thunder on Wednesday, November 24, the Okotoks Oilers on Saturday, November 27, and the Brooks Bandits on Sunday, November 28.
