The Whitecourt Wolverines held their own in a huge battle against the Lloydminster Bobcats on Saturday night at the Scott Safety Centre. From start to finish, it seemed that after every whistle there was a scrum of some size between the players and as the game went on the scrums got bigger. The matchup concluded with a whopping 23 penalties between the two teams.
From roughing after the whistle, tripping, high sticking, interference, too many men, checking from behind, slashing, holding, cross-checking, fighting, and game misconducts the evening matchup included nearly every penalty known to the game of hockey. Towards the end of the first period at least 10 players came together near centre ice following the whistle. The pile up that ensued ended up including the referees and took a couple of minutes to clear.
They did play hockey, too, of course. Lloydminster scored the only goal of the first period and 39 seconds into the second they increased their lead to 2-0 with a powerplay goal. Then, as if the flood gates opened, the Wolverines hammered back and scored three goals within seven minutes. The Bobcats managed to pocket one more before the end of the second knotting the teams at three apiece.
In the third, the Wolverines had two powerplay opportunities but were unable to capitalize. The Lloydminster Bobcats scored two more goals to round out the evening 5-3 over the home club. The Wolverines will now be on the road until the end of the month as they travel to Okotoks, Canmore, Calgary, and Spruce Grove. Their next action in the home town barn will be against the Sherwood Park Crusaders on Friday, November 30.
