Sounds of the Season

Have you ever had a snowball fight indoors while singing Christmas carols? If you attended Wednesday’s Whitecourt Community Choir concert at the United Church, then you would have had the opportunity to. No, it wasn’t with real snowballs but that didn’t mean it was any less fun, just a little bit less cold. During the show, the choir was positioned at the very front of the church, up on the altar area. Behind them, not visible to the audience, the group had a certain prop waiting for the perfect moment to strike. Once a smaller group began singing Let it Snow, those sitting down began tossing Styrofoam balls out into the surprised audience.

From there, as the song continued, the balls were thrown back and forth from the choir members to those in the audience, filling the room with laughter. Everyone had a lot of fun as they sang, laughed, and played catch at the same time. Each year, the Whitecourt Community Choir puts on a seasonal concert, Sounds of the Season. The choir always sings a wide variety of songs and it has become a perfect tradition to attend during the holidays.

On the evening of Wednesday, December 11, the choir had a nice sized audience to perform for. The group had a band playing alongside them with several instruments including a French horn, piano, guitar, and box drum. One particularly fun song that had the audience in stitches was sung by an angel and her decorated guitar-man. They sang about a delicious dessert that wasn’t so delicious the more bites you took and added in the name of the choir conductor as the baker.

Another fun moment was when they sang Jingle Bells with a twist. If you haven’t heard the version written by Bob Rivers, then be sure to check out the choir singing it on the Whitecourt Press Facebook page. The choir apologized to any Chevrolet owners ahead of starting, saying, “If you’re a Chevrolet driver, please try not to take this too personally.” Everyone had a laugh as they began singing about a broken-down vehicle with a bent frame, rust, and smoke and lighting a match to see the dash. Following the show, everyone shared a snack together at the front of the church where a little potluck was set up. It was a job well done by the group of talented Whitecourt residents.
