The Whitecourt RCMP responded to a situation at a downtown residence the morning of August 20, shortly before 9:00 a.m. Witnesses could only watch in wonder as over six RCMP cruisers sped to the residential area after receiving a 911 call. It’s not a common sight for Whitecourt, more of what you’d encounter in large cities or see in the movies. The situation compounded from the previous night and escalated, resulting in the RCMP having to surround the home with their weapons drawn. The day was spent diffusing a potentially deadly situation and talking the homeowner into coming out of the house peacefully. As a safety measure, a portion of the street was cordoned off, and EMS sat on standby. It was a tense and stressful day for all parties involved. Nearly eight hours later, the male surrendered and walked out peacefully unharmed.
Without knowing all the details, the public will voice their opinions and inject assumptions into the who and why. Unless you’re in this person’s shoes, we will never know why, but it’s not always about getting the specifics; it’s about understanding and showing compassion during extremely stressful times. Some individuals can become so overwhelmed with depression and have feelings of failure that the only logical way they see out is suicide or the threat to commit suicide. It’s a cry for help, and many men suffer in silence as society portrays that they must be strong providers. No, they don’t have to be, nor are they expected to be. We are all human, and when push comes to shove, each individual’s mentality has a beaking point. As to where the limit is or how severe one will react, nobody knows until they’ve been pushed over that point resulting in far worse outcomes than ever thought imaginable.
For the eyewitnesses, it can be scary and horrifying to watch the RCMP members walk around with rifles in hand as they surround the home. While it may be part of their training, dealing with Whitecourt’s standoffs is not something they come across regularly. They, too, risk their lives for others’ safety with only possible seconds to react and make the right decision. A lot of negativity is portrayed over television media regarding the actions of the RCMP. However, not all members and detachments should be painted with the same brush. Watching our local RCMP officers quietly communicate and strategize to end the situation peacefully was impressive. The patience and professionalism they portrayed regarding this individual were phenomenal, and the RCMP deserves praise in saving a life.
