The JFK Assassination Files – Is the truth out there?

by Susan Hofforth

Did you get all intrigued by the idea of conspiracy theories after the Oliver Stone movie called JFK back in 1991? What about the X-Files telling us that ‘the truth is out there’, indicating that maybe, just maybe the CIA and the FBI and the US Government kills its own and hides its secrets for political gain. It sounds ridiculous but at this point in the American political landscape, how could any secrets be any more ridiculous that the truth that is already out there?

Originally, President George H.W. Bush signed a law in 1992 stating that all documents related to the assassination of President Kennedy be released in 25 years unless doing so could do harm to intelligence, law enforcement, military operation or foreign relations.  That deadline would have been up in a month, and so, most were released, but others were held back for six months for review to be sure that they will not cause that damage that Bush was worried about.

It was because of the uproar caused by the Oliver Stone movie that had Bush call for the release of those files. From alien landings to assassination plots, the American public became convinced that they were being fooled, or kept out of the loop, and they demanded transparency from the government. And so, the time passed, and the files were released right in time to distract from a few of the other conspiracies out there in America at the moment.

So, what secrets were revealed? Nothing earth-shaking so far, but there was a lot to read. And because the secrets aren’t one hundred percent opened, the conspiracy theories have room to open up again as well. One thing that may be learned from this is that a movie that blends fact and fiction into an intriguing story still has the power to trick people into believing.

Why didn’t Trump reveal all the secrets at once? Was it his decision, or was it a clash of wills with the CIA as to who wanted the files released and who didn’t? Either way, it’s another mystery that might not be a mystery. Just something to get people intrigued over the next few months when a distraction from the regular mess of American politics is needed.
