The Peewee AA Whitecourt Rockies hosted a provincial tournament at Graham Acres from July 28 to 30 with six teams joining the fray. Parkland, Grande Prairie, Camrose, Strathmore, and Sherwood Park along with the local Rockies rounded out the action.
Tasha Smith, Provincial Championship Tournament Co-ordinator, said the Rockies gained experience during their weekend of play. “They are coming together really well. This is the first time Whitecourt has been back in the AA league for this division. Last year some of the kids played Mosquito A but for a lot of them, this year is their first time playing any kind of competitive ball.”
Tasha added that though the team struggled at the beginning of the year, they have come together as a team over the last couple of months. “They’ve definitely improved tremendously and whether they make the finals or not, it’s a good learning curve for them and a good learning experience.” The Rockies includes children aged 11 to 13 and one underage player as well.
Each team was guaranteed two round robin games and at least one playoff game. The Nationals tournament comes at the end of the season and with great progress made, the Rockies team will be looking to continue improving and growing as a group.
“I would like to thank our sponsors who make this event possible,” said Tasha, naming Pine Ridge Logging, Snyper Services, ANC, Jack Primeau Trucking, No Frills, Timio’s Liquor, Honey Badgers Ladies Slo Pitch team, and Stitch N’ Time as being a great support system.
