Want to be a mentor?

By Susan Hofforth

The school mentoring program is currently recruiting adults who have an hour a week to give to our children.

The Boys and Girls Club is looking for adults who are able to spend time with a student individually. The time would be spent doing crafts, reading, going for a walk, or whatever the two of you decide to do. The hour would be spent during school hours. Any student of any age, at any of the Whitecourt schools, is eligible for mentoring.

“You would be helping to support the student,” said organizer Sabrina Chapiel. “Your time would help to build confidence and self-esteem and bring some stability into the student’s life.” For this reason, the mentor must be reliable and consistent and committed to that hour per week as it gives the student something to look forward to.

The adult mentor must provide a criminal records check and then would receive one-on-one training. “It’s great for any adult,” said Chapiel. “Retired, working, or not working. Even if you are working, some companies are willing to give employees time for community service.”

If you have time to give, please contact Sabrina Chapiel at the Whitecourt Boys and Girls Club. The phone number is 778-6696 or send an email to teenwhitecourtbgc@gmail.com.
