Whitecourt is a growing community and, for its location, it sees a great deal of action in terms of community events, sports, and unique occasions like the World Snowmobile Invasion. What the city seems to be lacking, however, is a place that promotes cultural expression. This is why there has been such a push to develop a performing arts centre. Chelsea Grande, Manager of Recreation with the Town of Whitecourt, explains its significance.
“The facility will provide a venue to attract acts and art displays from across North America. It will have the ability to host concerts, opera, dance, plays, dinner theatres, orchestra, ballet, visual art and much, much more. There are also 20 user groups that have been identified locally that would use the facility. Many of these user groups currently do not have a home and travel around from facility to facility or operate out of homes and businesses after hours.”
And for Grande and other proponents of the centre, there is a lot more to it than just expanding what Whitecourt has to offer. In fact, it will be an economy booster because, as Grande mentions, many residents travel to other communities that have arts facilities in order to view performances or take part in activities. “The proposed facility would keep their business in the community, and it’s a place for all. For those who may not be interested in the arts, the proposed facility will also have a multiuse area that can be used to host conferences, fundraisers, weddings, and other large gatherings.”
As of February 26, an online survey became available for residents who were unable to attend the open houses on the topic, and residents are encouraged to take the survey and be heard. Although the open houses were well-attended, there are many people who have yet to weigh in. If you are still on the fence about the impact a performing arts centre could have on the town, you might be interested to know that more families in Whitecourt participate in the arts and cultural events than those who participate in hockey.
There is a compelling need for a performing arts facility and the construction of one promises to draw more entertainment acts to the town, provide the community with a dedicated venue for a variety of needs, and increase the business done in Whitecourt.
