Preparing employees for work is the mandate of The Whitecourt Job Development Program. They regularly offer integrated programming that helps unemployed people find jobs, and they have just begun a new program aimed at older adults re-entering the work force.
The regular training program consists of classroom work such as resume writing, career planning, and life management skills as well as on-the-job training at other locations doing hands-on skill development and work experience. Participants are offered certification training in WHMIS, First Aid, Forklift Operator, and other courses.
The main work experience offered to participants is in construction skills training, but they are always seeking employers willing to train individuals in other types of work that are more suitable to their career goals.
“The construction skills and certification program has been around many years. Last year, it was contracted to new management and we added a workshop component. Participants now attend classroom training and workshops in areas like Essential Skills, Life Skills, Life Management, and Health and Wellness,” said Program Co-ordinator Susan White. “We have received good feedback on the value of this additional training.”
The new Career Development Program is similar to the regular program, but aimed at people over 55 years old who wish to re-enter the workforce. The program is currently running in Whitecourt and will begin later in Westlock and Barrhead.
Those unemployed and interested in finding out if they are eligible for the program can contact the Whitecourt Job Development Program through Facebook or call 780-778-8311.
