The Scott Safety Centre was rocking with a nice-sized crowd on Friday, October 27 as the Whitecourt Wolverines took on the Fort McMurray Oil Barons. The 717 fans in attendance were treated to a rambunctious affair with several fights, huge hits, and a big win for the home team.
The evening was extra special with the annual Pink in the Rink Bra Toss Charity Event which is meant to raise breast cancer awareness. The Wolverines teamed up with the Canadian Cancer Society and asked fans to bring bras to the game as well as wear pink. The moment the Wolverines scored their first goal it was up the fans to throw bras out onto the ice in support of Bras Across the Bridge in Edmonton.
Tyr Thompson rocketed in the first Wolverines goal of the night at 11:11 in the first causing bras to rain down from the stands. Wolverines security quickly hopped out onto the ice to collect them. Tyr also recorded an assist on the second goal of the game scored by Ryan Grant. That wasn’t it for #15, though, as Tyr managed to notch another goal on the board in the second period giving him a three-point night and the title of home star of the game. Great job, Tyr!
Sixteen penalties were called between the two teams as they smashed into each other from end to end keeping the refs very busy. At one point in the first period, each time the whistle blew, a tussle would ensue, and all the players would pile up. After 60 minutes, it was the Wolverines who were victorious, winning over the Barons 4-1.
The next home game for the Wolverines isn’t until November 3 against the Drayton Valley Thunder.
