Lego, Lego, Lego, and more Lego! It was a tiny toy takeover at the Whitecourt & District Library for the past several weeks as children from the area brought in Lego creations for a chance to win some prizes. On the evening of Thursday, December 14, all 19 participants and their families were invited to a wrap-up party to find out the winners and enjoy delicious cake.
Split into four categories, the contest featured two winners at each level and this year’s theme was Winter Olympics. Creations featured all kinds of Olympic-related designs from the rings to different sports including hockey, skiing, luge, and snowboarding. All builds were showcased at the entrance for viewing pleasure and over the course of the competition anyone who visited the library had the opportunity to vote for his or her favourite.
Here are the 2017 Lego winners. In the eight years and under category, Julian Salazar took the title, and Trevor Trolley was runner-up. The winner in the nine-to-12-year-old category was Abbeygail Lapointe, with runner-up Chelsea Code. For the teens, in the 13 and up category, it was Matthew Watson who won and Joey Boldt came in second.
The final award of the evening was People’s Choice. These winners were chosen by library goers who voted in the public vote which was open throughout the contest. With 95 votes, nine-year-old Dillan Ewasiw was crowned champ and runner-up was Lauren Davio.
Councillor Ray Hilts was one of four judges and said that it was unlike anything he had done before. “It was really good, and the kids did a great job. The displays were very interesting. It was a lot of fun to be part of.”
One of the gifts that first place winners received was a gift certificate to Make My Fun Hobbies and Toys. Owner Travis Ferris was also a judge and was happy to be able to gift a prize to the winners. “It’s fun and better than video games for sure.”
Camden Robinson said that numerous things caught his attention as he made his way around the room judging the creations. “Kid’s got really creative with their use of the blocks to create words and the rings and all that kind of fun stuff. It was really neat to see what they accomplished.”
Congratulations to everyone who put in a Lego creation for the contest. Your participation makes it that much more exciting and fun. You should be very proud of yourselves!
