The Whitecourt Wolverines would have preferred finishing out their North Division Semi-Final series against the Fort McMurray Oil Barons at home in front of their fanbase on Sunday, March 25. Things looked promising out of the gate as the Wolverines reached the scoreboard first when Jude Butler rallied one in thanks to a set-up from Brayden Labant and Ben Evanish.
However, eight minutes later, the Barons scored their first of five goals leaving the Wolverines scrambling to regain control. Even though the scoring summary showed a lopsided loss, the shots on net were pretty even with the Wolverines managing 21 to the Barons 25. Xavier Potvin had plenty of big saves and helped keep the Wolverines in the game early on.
After the first and second periods wrapped up, it was 2-1 for the Oil Barons and the Wolverines came out like lions to take over the third period. They scrapped in the corners, dug in deep to beat the rushes, and passed beautifully between them but no matter what they did, they just couldn’t beat the Barons’ netminder.
The series is now tied up at three games apiece with game seven set for Tuesday, March 27 at the Casman Centre in Fort McMurray. The winner moves on to the North final and the Wolverines will be ready for a fight. Cheer loudly, fans; the team needs your support now more than ever!
