Wolverines battle back and defeat Bonnyville at home

The Whitecourt Wolverines are back on track taking in their second win in a row defeating the Bonnyville Pontiacs 5-4 on Saturday, January 6 at the Scott Safety Centre. The matchup seemed to be in the bag after the first period as the Wolverines took a commanding jump, jamming four goals past the Pontiacs’ net minder ending the first with a 4-0 lead.

However, as any good hockey fan knows, it isn’t over until it’s over. In the second period, Bonnyville found its footing and stormed back into it with three unanswered goals ending the period only one behind the Wolverines, 4-3. Unfortunately, the comeback didn’t end there.

With a mere 34 seconds into the final frame, the Pontiacs tied things up and suddenly local fans found themselves staring at a tied game that only 25 minutes prior was a stream engine driven by the home squad. Thankfully, you can never count the Wolverines out as they lifted their chins, pumped up their chests, and pushed back hard.

A little over halfway through the third, Liam Motley scored his 17th goal of the year and second of the night, a sniper, and brought the Scott Safety Centre crowd to its feet. With sheer determination, the Wolverines managed to hold off the Pontiacs even in the last 90 seconds when Bonnyville pulled their goalie in a last-ditch attempt to tie it back up.

Kudos to Bonnyville for clawing their way back into the game and giving the Wolverines a run for their money but, ultimately, Whitecourt was able to add a number to their win column. Next action for the Wolverines will be another home game on Tuesday, January 9 against the Lloydminster Bobcats. From there, they head out for a two-game road trip and will be back home on January 16 for a game against the Drayton Valley Thunder.
