Free yoga classes
Yoga dates back thousands of years and originated in India. It is designed to bring body and mind into mutual harmony. Yoga teaches how, through breath control, to still the mind and attain higher states of awareness. Yoga is designed for anyone regardless of fitness level. Beginners start with low levels of stretching techniques, and for those more experienced, the poses focus on strength to hold positions for longer periods.
Local Yoga instructor Brittany Lawlor, owner of Yoga with B, finds it more peaceful to hold classes outside and become one with nature. She has offered her expertise to instruct free yoga classes in various outdoor places within Whitecourt. The classes are called Karma Yoga, and all Lawlor asks is for participants to bring a donation. All donations will go towards supporting local non-profit organizations. Last Thursday morning’s Karma Yoga class took place at Rotary Park with proceeds going to the Whitecourt Boys & Girls Club.
Outdoor Karma Yoga classes will be held throughout the summer providing the weather co-operates. Lawlor has scheduled the next event for July 24 at 7 p.m. at the end of the 47 Street river access area. “It’s a nice quiet place with the sound of water flowing in the background and picturesque scenery which makes it a great place to clear busy minds and focus on your body,” said Lawlor. The following class will be at Rotary Park at 9 a.m. For those who want to try something a bit different, Lawlor has teamed up with Original Joe’s to offer Beer Yoga.
