The grand opening for the new playground at Whitecourt Central School took place on Monday afternoon with volunteers and staff working down to the last minute to get things ready for the ribbon cutting at 2:30 p.m.

“When it opened, it was like Christmas morning,” said Assistant Principal Tim Bowman. The kids rushed onto the playground cheering, and have been making the most of the equipment ever since.

“I’m seeing a lot of good manners out there,” said Bowman. “Some of the equipment is very popular, but they have been good about sharing, turn taking, and helping others.”

A lot of physical skills are being built on the apparatus as well. “They do lots of climbing and balance work. It’s really using their strength and co-ordination,” Bowman said.

School playgrounds have a significant cost, but no school money is allotted for them. This playground was paid for by the community. The project began 18 months ago and sponsors shared the $110,000 cost. “Sponsors were giving right down to the last minute,” said Bowman. “Millar Western donated the wood chips, and Whitecourt Transport delivered them.”

The playground is getting a lot of use. After 5 p.m., it is open to everyone. “It’s a great addition to our community,” said Bowman. “I’m really proud of everyone in Whitecourt for helping put this here.”
