The Whitecourt Wolverines have split their first four games of the 2018/2019 AJHL regular season. They kicked off the year against the Bonnyville Pontiacs with two back-to-back games at home and, unfortunately, dropped both 3-2. To get things back on track the Wolverines came out firing against the Drayton Valley Thunder on Thursday, September 20 at the Scott Safety Centre.
Ben Evanish kicked off the scoring in the first with helpers from Brayden Labant and Ryan Grant. Labant then assisted Bjorn Robinson a couple of minutes later bringing the score to 2-0 heading into the second period. Though Drayton Valley managed to get on the board with two goals, the Wolverines added to their tally, too, making it 3-2 at the end of the period. In the final frame both teams managed to pot two goals but that kept the Wolverines on top with a final of 5-4 on the night.
On Sunday, September 23 both teams met up again for an afternoon matchup, this time in Drayton Valley. Just like in their previous game, the Wolverines quickly netted two goals in the first period putting themselves ahead of the Thunder 2-0. The second period proved to be the busiest period yet for the Wolverines this season with seven goals scored altogether between both teams! Drayton Valley was firing on all cylinders as they scored not one or two or three but four goals within the 20-minute period.
Thankfully, the Whitecourt squad was quick to respond and scored three of their own keeping the lead 5-4. In the third period, Charles-Olivier Ouimet scored his first of the year unassisted bringing the final score to 6-4 for the Wolverines. The next home games are on October 2 against the Grande Prairie Storm and Friday, October 5 against the Olds Grizzlys.
