Boys & Girls Club is in need of new members

The Boys & Girls Club of Whitecourt & District held its monthly board meeting on Wednesday, February 7 in the club at the Carlan Services Community Resource Centre. The group spoke about the importance of fundraisers and grants to support the services they provide. 60% of the revenue at the club comes from grants, while 30% is from paying parents whose children patron the club. A further 10% comes solely from fundraising efforts.

Club president, Dana Tartal said that, along with fundraisers and searching out grant opportunities, the top priority is new board members. “In order to offer the most fulsome program that we can, it’s important to have a full board to provide strategic direction for the club. Right now, we only have three members and we’re looking to have at least eight.”

The time commitment includes a monthly meeting for roughly two hours and there are other volunteer opportunities as well. “In order to be a high functioning board, it’s important that all of the members actually participate regularly. We are hoping that when one signs up as a member, that moving forward they’ll commit to a full year term and hopefully beyond.”

Dana’s original interest in joining the board began when her children joined the club. Even though her children are now in school full time and are no longer attending regularly, she remains because she enjoys it. “I’m still here because this is a really rewarding group to be a part of. I think it’s important for my personal and professional development to be involved in a group like this, doing some really meaningful work and getting some great experiences with lovely people.”

During the meeting, the board also discussed a need for grad dresses at the Teen Centre. The flood destroyed the collection they had accumulated for young girls to use and they were desperately trying to replenish it. Anyone who has a prom or bridesmaid dress, in a variety of sizes that are not being used, can donate them to the Teen Centre.  It would go a long way to make a young lady’s day.

Those interested in learning more about becoming a member are welcomed with open arms to sit in during a monthly meeting. “They can see what it feels like and if its something they are interested in becoming a part of longer term” explained Dana. “I’m also happy to personally talk with anyone about what our group does and what the commitment looks like and answer any questions they have.” To speak with Dana, call or text 780-778-1178.
