The post season is just around the corner for the Whitecourt Wolverines! On Saturday, February 24, the home team took on the Fort McMurray Oil Barons at the Scott Safety Centre for its last regular season home game. In front of 687 fans, the Wolverines played a hard game and fought hard to get back up from an early deficit after the Barons scored twice in the first.
Heading into the second period, the Wolverines wanted to cut the lead in the half, but the Barons held their ground and managed to sniper in a quick goal with only 28 seconds into the frame making it 3-0. Just over the halfway point of the second period, #19 Jude Butler pocketed one past the Baron netminder and got the Wolverines up on the board, 3-1.
The comeback was still in full force as the third period began with the home team on the power play. At the 32 second mark, Wolverine Jaedon Leslie scored a beauty from Yannik Bertrand and Tyr Thompson. If you weren’t at the game, be sure to check out the Whitecourt Press Facebook page as we have a video of Jaedon’s goal posted.
Though the Wolverines came within one goal of tying things up, the Barons managed to pot one more and took the win 4-2. The next action for the Wolverines comes in March at the Casman Centre in Fort McMurray for a doubleheader against the Barons March 2 and 3. After that, it’s playoff time! Keep an eye on the Wolverines Facebook page for game times as soon as the post-season action is set.
